- Get 500 gm potatoes
- Get Oil for deep frying
- Take For the tempering
- Prepare 1 tsp mustard seeds

- Get 200 gm chickpea flour (besan)
- Make ready 1/2 tsp Red chilli powder (opt)
- Get 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- Take 1 tsp carom seeds (ajwain)
- Get 1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
- Prepare Pinch baking soda
- Get Salt as per taste
- Make ready as needed Water
- Take For spicy green chutney with peanuts
- Take 1/2 cup coriander leaves
- Make ready 1/4 cup mint leaves (pudhina)
- Get 1 green chilles
- Make ready 1 inch pc ginger
- Take 2 garlic cloves
- Prepare 1 handful fried peanuts peeled
- Make ready 1/2 lemon juice
- Prepare 1/2 tsp sugar (opt)
- Take 1/2 tsp jeera
- Get as needed Water
- Get Salt
Serve hot with tea and green chutney / tomato ketch up. Serving Ideas: Serve Batata Vada as a snack or side dish with green chilli and coriander chutney. Steps to make Batata vada:
- Boil the potatoes until soft peel & mash coarsely
- Next prepare the tempering. Heat oil & add mustard seeds,jeera Whn they crackle, add the curry leaves followed by ginger, garlic & green chilles, chopped onion,haldi salt and add remaining ingredients
- Mix well & cook for a few minutes being careful not to burn the tempering.
- Add the tempering to mashed potatoes
- Divide the potatoes mixture into equal sized portions & make ball of that
- Make a batter with the besan & other ingredients mentioned in the batter. Be sure to add water little at a time & check the consistency, so that the batter does not become too thin.
- Heat the oil for deep frying
- When the oil is hot, dip each ball in the batter and deep fry until golden brown in colour
- Serve hot with green peanut chutney
- To make the green chutney, grind together all the ingredients for the chutney in a blender using minimum amount of water, till u get a smooth paste
